Jenipapo is a fruit from "jenipapeiro", native tree found in Central and South America.Its pulp is aromatic, sour and sweetish, with light brown colour and rich in iron, calcium and vitamins B1, B2, B5 and C.This pulp is used by local communities as fortificant, apetite stimulant and is indicated to fight against anemia as well as spleen and liver diseases, etc.When the fruit is still green it produces a natural colorant and when matured can be used in the manufacturing of juices, wines, smoothies, jams and candied sweets.The jenipapo's essencial oil contains carboxylic acids and their esters being the octanoic acid the predominant one whose presence delivers antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Additional to the current usage in the food manufacturing as well as medical applications the jenipapo's extract and oil may be applied in the cosmetics industry for the manufacturing of fragances, soaps, conditioners, solar protectors, body moisturizers, etc.
